The Red Phantom
One of the communications which has been attributed to the Zodiac was a
communication mailed from San Rafael, California on July 8, 1974.
The communication was addressed to the editor at the San Francisco
Chronicle and it requested that the newspaper column by Count Marco be
canceled.
Count Marco was Marc H. Spinelli who wrote an opinionated advice column
for women.

There are still questions about whether or not this communication was
actually from the Zodiac.
There have been various theories about the reason the writer of this
communication signed it as "the Red Phantom".

The Red Phantom circa 1962
(Excerpt from previous Project MK-ZODIAC report)
On June 26, 2010, Chris Yarbrough (who
is the administrator
of the internet forum www.crimeshadowsnews.com and www.zodiackillertruth.com) tweeted that there was a Count
Marco column from October, 1962, which
mentioned the Red Phantom.

This letter was printed in Count Marco’s column in the San Francisco Chronicle on October 2, 1962. (It was printed in other newspapers on different dates.)

An anonymous writer wrote:
"Dear Count Marco: Instead of sneaking up on women like a red
phantom with black paint, you should work openly and usefully to help
this free and generous country which feeds your nasty face. - Chicago"
Count Marco replied:
"Red Phantom?! I’ll have you know I
wear gold Chinese silk or gold Italian raw silk evening jackets, and I
don’t sneak. I go about town in them openly so you will be sure
to see me. In fact, I’ll be in Chicago on December 5 to give you
a personal look at me, so be prepared."

The fact that this message pertains to Chicago is important because, in
a separate report, Project MK-ZODIAC examined other clues which may
link the Zodiac to the Chicago region.

It is possible that this anonymous writer was referring to the Phantom of the Opera ("like a red phantom with black paint").
The Red Phantom circa 1969
This letter was printed in Count Marco’s column in the San Francisco Sunday Examiner and Chronicle on January 12, 1969 (after the first confirmed Zodiac murders on December 20, 1968).

An anonymous writer wrote:
"Dear Count Marco: Instead of sneaking up on women like a red phantom with black paint, you should work openly and usefully to help this free and generous country which feeds your nasty face. You must belong to the Clu Clucks Clan (sic) the way you talk about American women. I don’t know why I’m writing this anyway, you’re just full of (censored)." - HAPPILY MARRIED
Count Marco replied:
"Red phantom with black paint, indeed! If you want to call me names don’t be sneaky about it. You won’t be the first female who has called me a "little devil."

The letter is a different version of the letter which had previously been printed in the San Francisco Chronicle on October 2, 1962.
The first sentence is exactly the same for both the 1962 version and the 1969 version. ("Instead of sneaking up on women like a red phantom with black paint, you should work openly and usefully to help this free and generous country which feeds your nasty face.")
The 1969 version has two additional sentences. ("You must belong to the Clu Clucks Clan (sic) the way you talk about American women. I don’t know why I’m writing this anyway, you’re just full of (censored).")
The 1962 version was signed "Chicago". The 1969 version was signed "Happily Married".
The reply from Count Marco is different for each version.
In the reply to the 1969 version, it is evident that Count Marco thought the writer was female.
The writer misspelled "Ku Klux Klan" as "Clu Clucks Clan" which is evocative of how the Zodiac often misspelled words.
It has been previously conjectured that the costume worn by the Zodiac at Lake Berryessa may have been inspired by the costumes worn by the members of the Ku Klux Klan. This reference to the Ku Klux Klan may support that theory.
